AEGEAN RADAR
About Aegean Radar: who is behind the site and how it works
Aegean Radar is an independent information project for the Aegean Sea. It puts AIS ship positions, marine weather for ports and islands, official navigational and weather warnings and maritime news from selected sources in one place. We are not affiliated with the Hellenic Coast Guard, the Hellenic Navy Hydrographic Service, the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS/EMY), port authorities or any data provider.

What you will find here
- AIS map — the latest positions received from ships in the Aegean, with name, MMSI, speed, course and time of the message.
- Marine weather — wind, gusts, waves, swell and water temperature for 13 ports and islands, with a simple Go / Caution / No answer for small boats.
- Official warnings — navigational warnings (Navtex/HNHS) and weather warnings (MeteoAlarm/HNMS), always with their dates.
- News — headlines about the Aegean, ferries and shipping from public RSS feeds, in their original language, linked to the source.
Methodology and limits
AIS comes from AISStream through one server-side collector. Coverage depends on volunteer receivers and is incomplete, especially far from the coast. A ship that is not on the map may simply not be received.
Weather is a model forecast (Open-Meteo; MET Norway as backup). It is not an observation and not an official forecast. The Go / Caution / No rating applies fixed thresholds for wind, gusts and waves; it is guidance, not permission to go out.
We do not detect incidents. The site never turns news or AIS data into “incidents” or risk scores. We only show official warnings that carry a date, and we say clearly where they come from.
Not for navigation or safety decisions. In an emergency at sea call 112 or the Hellenic Coast Guard on 108.
