      GULF OF KAVALA

The sea at Kavala: what to know

The forecast on this page is for a sea point off Kavala (40.91° N, 24.40° E), in the Gulf of Kavala. Values come from the Open-Meteo forecast and marine models (MET Norway as backup) and are updated several times a day.

More about the sea at Kavala: wind, traffic, how to read the numbers

The Gulf of Kavala faces south towards Thasos. North winds blow from the mountains and push boats offshore; southerly winds bring waves into the gulf and the town beaches.

Ferries to Thasos leave from Kavala and nearby Keramoti all day; there are also oil platforms in the gulf (Prinos) with safety zones.

How to read the numbers: wind up to about 10 knots and waves under 0.5 m are usually comfortable for a small boat or SUP near the coast. Waves from 1 m and gusts above 22 knots are already serious for boats under 6 m. The rating follows the boat profile you choose.

      Questions and answers

How big are the waves at Kavala today?

The current significant wave height in metres and its period are in the “Now” block at the top, and hour by hour in the 48-hour chart. Values come from the Open-Meteo marine model.

What is the sea temperature at Kavala?

We show the model sea-surface temperature at a point offshore. Close to the beach the water can differ by 1–2 °C, especially after a strong wind.

When is it dangerous to go out by boat at Kavala?

With the default small-boat profile, gusts above 22 knots or waves above 1 m give “Not recommended”. Always check the official HNMS forecast, the official warnings and any sailing ban of the Coast Guard before going out.
