The sea at Mytilene: what to know

More about the sea at Mytilene: wind, traffic, how to read the numbers
Mytilene is on the east coast of Lesvos, facing Turkey. North winds funnel through the strait; the gulfs of Kalloni and Gera inside the island are calmer but shallow.
The port of Mytilene serves ferries to Piraeus, Thessaloniki and Ayvalık/Dikili, and patrol boats of the Coast Guard are often visible on AIS in the strait.
How to read the numbers: wind up to about 10 knots and waves under 0.5 m are usually comfortable for a small boat or SUP near the coast. Waves from 1 m and gusts above 22 knots are already serious for boats under 6 m. The rating follows the boat profile you choose.
Questions and answers
How big are the waves at Mytilene today?
The current significant wave height in metres and its period are in the “Now” block at the top, and hour by hour in the 48-hour chart. Values come from the Open-Meteo marine model.

We show the model sea-surface temperature at a point offshore. Close to the beach the water can differ by 1–2 °C, especially after a strong wind.
When is it dangerous to go out by boat at Mytilene?
With the default small-boat profile, gusts above 22 knots or waves above 1 m give “Not recommended”. Always check the official HNMS forecast, the official warnings and any sailing ban of the Coast Guard before going out.
