      SARONIC GULF

The sea at Piraeus: what to know

The forecast on this page is for a sea point off Piraeus (37.90° N, 23.60° E), in the Saronic Gulf. Values come from the Open-Meteo forecast and marine models (MET Norway as backup) and are updated several times a day.

More about the sea at Piraeus: wind, traffic, how to read the numbers

The Saronic Gulf is fairly sheltered, but the summer meltemi (north to north-east) funnels between Attica and Aegina, and southerly winds in winter push waves straight into the Piraeus and Faliro coast.

Piraeus is the busiest passenger port in Europe and a major container port: ferries leave every few minutes in summer and dozens of ships wait at anchor in the gulf. Keep clear of the port entrances and the anchorages and listen to VHF channel 16.

How to read the numbers: wind up to about 10 knots and waves under 0.5 m are usually comfortable for a small boat or SUP near the coast. Waves from 1 m and gusts above 22 knots are already serious for boats under 6 m. The rating follows the boat profile you choose.

      Questions and answers

How big are the waves at Piraeus today?

The current significant wave height in metres and its period are in the “Now” block at the top, and hour by hour in the 48-hour chart. Values come from the Open-Meteo marine model.

What is the sea temperature at Piraeus?

We show the model sea-surface temperature at a point offshore. Close to the beach the water can differ by 1–2 °C, especially after a strong wind.

When is it dangerous to go out by boat at Piraeus?

With the default small-boat profile, gusts above 22 knots or waves above 1 m give “Not recommended”. Always check the official HNMS forecast, the official warnings and any sailing ban of the Coast Guard before going out.
